Can Dogs Eat Watermelon? What Pet Owners Should Know

Can Dogs Eat Watermelon? What Pet Owners Should Know

Dogs can eat watermelon. However, due to seeds and high sugar content, pet owners should use caution and moderation when feeding their pup this delicious summer treat.

How to Feed Your Dog Watermelon

Seedless, small pieces of watermelon are the best way to feed your dog this sweet treat to prevent choking, intestinal blockages, and digestive issues.

  • Remove the seeds and rind. Before offering watermelon to your dog, make sure to remove the seeds and the tough outer rind. The seeds can pose a choking hazard, especially for small dogs, and the rind is difficult to digest and may cause gastrointestinal issues.
  • Serve in small, manageable pieces: Cut the watermelon into small, bite-sized pieces to prevent choking and make it easier for your dog to consume. American Kennel Club also recommends puree, ice cream, and frozen watermelon treats.
  • Monitor for adverse reactions: Some dogs may have sensitivities or allergies to certain fruits. Introduce watermelon gradually and observe your dog for any signs of an upset stomach or digestive discomfort.

    Is Watermelon Good for Dogs?

Watermelon is safe for dogs as an occasional treat. Overall, watermelon is also low in calories and fat, making it a healthy and refreshing treat for dogs, particularly during the hot summer months.

While it contains beneficial vitamins and minerals that are good for dogs, it is also high in natural sugars. Too much watermelon can lead to an upset stomach or diarrhea due to its high water and sugar content.

    Can Dogs Eat Watermelon Seeds?

If you want to feed your dog watermelon, it’s best to avoid seeds.

While small amounts of watermelon seeds are usually harmless, large quantities can lead to digestive issues. The outer coating is tough and may be challenging for dogs to digest.

Watermelon seeds can also pose a choking hazard for smaller dogs and dogs who tend to gulp or inhale food quickly.

Seedless watermelons are best to minimize any potential risks.

    Can Dogs Eat Watermelon Rinds?

It’s best to avoid feeding your dogs watermelon rinds.

While some dogs may be fine eating them, others may struggle to chew and digest the fibrous, hard rind.

To avoid digestive issues, choking hazards, and internal blockages, it’s best to stick with small amounts of the flesh of the fruit.

Other Tips for Feeding Watermelon To Your Dog

    • Don’t add sugar, Xylitol, or other artificial sweeteners
    • If you mix it with anything (like yogurt), be sure there additives are unsweetened
    • Give it to your pet in moderation
    • Always supervise your dog while eating the watermelon
    • Consult with a professional in regards to your pet’s dietary needs and restrictions
